You're on the right track. I think the "dying on TV" may have begun during the Vietnam War era, but I can remember Movietone News on the Korean conflict that was bad. I dislike TV news on any account. I think you ask the right questions.
The word "peculiarly" is peculiarly difficult to pronounce. I suspect the other translations (I don't have them with me) use a better word.

Of course, I don't mind! Thank you for recalling the memory of the Captain. I do remember him well! Consider the positive impact you have having with this blog, at least on this Dominican!

To answer the quote -not true. You are 'doing' what God created you to be - a writer. You are 'being' something when you are writing. God gives each of us a gift that others don't have. Use your gift wisely.

I think you are right on! Merton and Day were the first two spiritual writers I read when I was converting and I have continued to appreciate the ways they complement each other. Have you read The Life You Save May Be Your Own by Paul Elie? This is a kind of joint biography of Merton, Day, Flannery O'Connor, and Walker Percy and I really liked it.

Christina,
Surely you haven't escaped hardships. You have had an incredibly difficult year. Your father had cancer, chemo and passed away. You stopped working and are struggling with maintaining life around less money. Life is hard.

When I look at you, I think why not me? Then I realize that in the past 2 years, both Tom and Clark were hospitalized. Tom had a reinfection of the same thing that put him in the hosptial in the first place. We were terrified and had to rely on our community.

I clicked through the miscarriage links and found the portrait of the family who lost their baby, with their precious baby in their hands. I was imagining the worst, but the look on their beautiful faces is one of grace, blessing and peace.

God gives us what we can handle, God gives us what we need to grow and deepen our faith. He doesn't give us too much, just enough, to push us forward. Forward into the body. You are not any less because you are a nose and not an ear. You get runny, but not achy. I get achy and ringy, but not runny. =)
